“Only place for diseases to hide is among the poor, especially when the poor are socially and medically segregated from those whose deaths might be considerable more important”.

Despite medical advances that have produced hundreds of drugs that are safe and effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, infectious diseases are still a major cause of death, disability and social and economic upheaval for millions around the world. More than 90 percent of the deaths from infectious diseases worldwide are caused by only a handful of diseases. These diseases - lower respiratory infections, HIV/AIDS, diarrheal diseases, tuberculosis, malaria and measles are also the leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa . And, while not major killers, a number of the world's 'neglected' infectious diseases such as lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, intestinal parasites, leprosy and onchocerciasis cause chronic disability and stigma for millions.

That is the reason why we started the Liaison office for

AIMS AT

Providing the basis for a long-term, structural cooperation between the German Research Center for Infectious Diseases at the University of Würzburg (ZINF, Dr.Jorg Hacker), the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics in Hyderabad (CDFD, Dr.Seyed E. Hasnain)

And the public and private research networks connected to the two centres.

Development of bi- and multilateral research projects in the area of Infectious Diseases Research,

and to find and approach the resources of financing.

To build up strong links to the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in both countries to use the excellent research cooperation already existing today as a base for a stronger economic cooperation.

In the long run the liaison office should be the nucleus to grow-up a bilateral research laboratory for common research going beyond Germany and India. It is expected as a kind of cooperation gateway for the German and Indian industry.
